Whispers and poorly concealed stares followed the thin figure stalking down the dusty road. The man ignored the townsfolk as well as he knew how, but his speed was hindered by the cane he was forced to walk with due to his newly acquired prosthetic leg. The light from the oil lanterns hanging in doorways and on porches lit up his features so that he looked to be nothing more than skin stretched over angular bones, the shadows heavy around and beneath his sunken eyes and dancing on his cheekbones to make them seem especially high. The numerous scars visible on his face alone made parents usher their children inside the supposed safety of their home, and made the ladies blanch and avert their eyes. Quickening his steps as much as he dared, Setmi hurried through the town, purposely avoiding eye contact with the locals.
As he drew nearer his goal, Setmi turned his vivid pink eyes on a man who was snickering with a few other men, all of whom were seated on chairs set in front of a tavern, tankards of ale in hand. The man was hushed when Setmi’s shadow fell over him, and his small watery eyes turned to look up at the albino. A few people made is though to interfere but were quickly remedied of that idea when Setmi’s spider-like hand seized the man’s thick neck like a vice and pulled him to his feet. A long pale tongue slipped from between Setmi’s narrow lips and laved across his nose as he stared down the man whimpering in his grasp.
“I can hear her screaming,” said Setmi in a low, hoarse voice. “The woman that you raped and left to die; you reek of her blood and perfume.” Baring his teeth, Setmi tightened his grip until the man could not breathe. “Does your wife know how you enjoy pillaging other women’s bodies before disposing of them like yesterdays garbage? Do your neighbors know that they live next to a monster?”
In an incredible show of strength, Setmi raised the overweight man into the air by one hand, and snarled like a wild animal, addressing the people that had circled the pair. “You allow this foulest of the foul to live amongst you? You allow this lowest of the low to rape your wives and daughters and sisters while you sit around and do nothing?” A loud snap filled the air and Setmi allowed the man’s dead body to crumple to the ground at his feet. “You are frightened of me merely because I was born with a curse I have no control over, yet you allowed this fiend residence in your town as he killed those closest to you!”
Setmi sneered and spat on the corpse staring up at the sky. Turning, he resumed walking down the road, the people shoving at each other to make way for him. There was silence until he melted into the shadows on the outskirts of their little town, and then the whispers began once more.
